Sampangi case: Shettar deposes before court

The trial of KGF MLA Y Sampangi continued in the Lokayukta court on Tuesday, with Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, Jagadish Shettar, deposing before the court for the second time in two months to record evidence.

Shettar was the Assembly Speaker when Sampangi was trapped by the Lokayukta police and gave permission for the prosecution of the MLA. Therefore, the minister was asked to depose before the Lokayukta court. According to Lokayukta officials, Shettar responded to all the queries posed to him and did not shy away from giving any information.

The MLA was trapped by the Lokayukta police in January 2009 while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs five lakh from H M Farooq, a businessman, at the Legislator’s Home.

A complaint had been registered against Sampangi by Farooq, following which the Lokayukta police trapped the MLA. He was later booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
