10,000 DU students register for jobs

About 10,000 students have registered in the third phase of Delhi University's campus placement, seeking jobs in 10 companies which will be coming to the campus shortly.

Of them, five are non-governmental organisations and the rest are travel and tourism companies.

An official at the placement cell said the travel and tourism companies are focusing on students who are in search of jobs irrespective of salary packages. “These students will be used to do the work of running around,” added the official.

The students selected by NGOs will be sent to states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odhisa,West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan primarily to collect data, said the official.

“Usually the salary packages of these companies are not more than 1 to 1.5 lakh per annum,” he added. But the companies have not come out with their packages yet.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, two phases of job placement interviews have already taken place, attended by around 8 to10 companies. “Apart from tourism companies and NGOs, job opportunities came from the Air Force,” the official said.

Compared to previous years, there is a change in the type of sectors approaching students.

Earlier, more industry-oriented companies visited the campus but now there is an increase in insurance and tourism related companies, added the official. “However, in the prominent colleges, companies from the Industrial sector still thrive,” he said.

The official said some multinational companies have enquired about the placement procedure but it is not clear whether they would recruit. “Yes, talks are going on with a Japanese retail company but it is too soon to confirm,” the official said.

Despite tough competition for a handful of jobs, students feel that going through campus placement process is easier than applying individually in companies.

“Most of the students applying here are from less known colleges and in desperate need of a job. Why would a student from  Shri Ram College of Commerce or Hindu or any other top ranked college register here when their own college provides them with the best packages,” the official added.

For the last phase of placement, companies like Yatra.

com, International travel and tour company Isango, NGO Pradan that works in rural development area have registered.

The campus placement in DU will begin from March 22.
