'Navara' paddy brings smiles in NR Pura

The farmers in Narasimharajapura have been growing paddy from time immeorial.

Now, a farmer has started growing ‘Navara’  rice, a unique endemic crop native to Kerala with high medicinal properties.

The farmers in Kerala grow this crop in hundreds of acre just for medicinal purpose. ‘Navara’ can be harvested within 100 days and can be grown during all seasons. Navara rice, associated with Ayurveda and considered to be an energetic food for people of all ages.

Inspired by his success, farmer Rajendrakumar of B H Kaimara in N R Pura has also started growing the paddy in his land. In the beginning using 10 kg seeds, he grew paddy in 10 gunte land. “I used organic manure. I could harvest 5.50 quintal paddy. One quintal paddy gives 70 kg rice,” he said.

Navara paddy fetches Rs 5,000 per qunital. It can be sold in Jeeva Sudha stall of Organic Mission in Shimoga. The rice fetches Rs 6,500 per quintal. The retail sellers sell Navara rice for Rs 100 per kg. “When I have to sell rice to shops I have to make 25 kg or 50 kg bags.

To help the people, I sell it in two kg and five kg packets. I also sell paddy seeds for Rs 50, to introduce the variety to the people of the region,” he said. To know more about Navara paddy, one can contact Rajendra Kumar at 9481154643
