Ex-DGP writes to PC on low morale of Gujarat police

Emphasising on the low morale of the state police presently embroiled in numerous controversies, former DGP R B Sreekumar on Sunday wrote to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram highlighting a steady decline in the quality of service of the IPS officers in the state.

Sreekumar said the strictures on the state administration and the police by the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court has taken its toll on the organisational health and confidence level of the police officers here.

With the post of the DGP in the state remaining vacant since September 2010, the quality of service delivered by the police department, especially the IPS officers, have taken a hit, Sreekumar wrote. The senior most Additional DGP has been officiating as the state’s DGP ever since S S Khandvawala retired in 2010.

“Many IPS officers in Gujarat are dismayed that the Ministry of Home Affairs did not exercise its responsibility for safeguarding genuine career interests of IPS officers of Gujarat cadre,’’ claimed Sreekumar.
