A ragpicker has been arrested for killing a 55-year-old man in Sarai Kale Khan of south-east Delhi, police said on Monday.

Accused Babul Miyan, 35, of Yamuna Khaddar was a friend of one Premnath Choudhary. Babul knew that Premnath had kept his money in a purse. On the night of March 9-10, he went to Premnath’s house to steal the money and killed him when he woke up in the middle of the robbery.

“Babul later burnt Premnath’s body to conceal his identity and dumped it in a DDA Park in Sarai Kale Khan,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (south-east).
Police found Premnath’s body on March 10 and preserved it at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary.

His elder brother Wakil in Seharsa district of Bihar was also informed.  However, when no one came to claim the body, it was handed over to Sarai Kale Khan crematorium for last rites.

A case under section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offense) was also registered over the matter at Sunlight Colony police station and investigation was taken up.

During investigation, police received a tip-off that Babul may be involved in the case and that Premnath was last seen with him.

Accordingly, on Sunday, upon a secret information, Babul was arrested.

A purse containing Rs 7,000 and household utensils of the victim have been recovered at his instance.

“Another utensil belonging to Premnath has also been recovered at the instance of the accused from the shop of a scrap dealer in Sarai Kale Khan village. Blood stained clothes of the accused have also been recovered,” Chaudhry added.
