Teachers caned on their own day

Scores of ‘Shiksha Mitras’ (temporary teachers in UP’s primary schools) were injured when the police used force to disperse their demonstration before the assembly demanding better wages.

Thousands of ‘shiksha mitras’ had gathered in the state capital from across the state to press their demand.

As they tried to break the police cordon to march towards the assembly, the police fired tear gas shells and then made a lathi charge.

“It is shameful that the government, instead of conceding our genuine demands on Teachers’ Day, used force on us”, said a teacher, who had received injuries on his head.

According to the police, however, the teachers’ demonstration had turned violent and they indulged in pelting stones, prompting the authorities to use mild force.
