The government is considering extension of its urban renewal scheme by a further two years to enable completion of projects it has taken up across the country, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The deadline on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), sanctioned by UPA I, falling on March 31, several states have been pressing on the government to extend the scheme by a further two years that would pave the way for them to finish the sanctioned projects.

Under the project’s Urban Infrastructure and Governance component covering 65 identified cities, 157 projects amounting to Rs 20,478.63 crore investment had been sanctioned, the Minister told the Upper House.

After the completion of projects under the current JNNURM, the government would announce the second version of the scheme to cover all the cities in the country, he further added.
