11 dead, 25 injured in Hiriyur accident

They were returning home after Ugadi shopping

As many as 11 people including two women were killed and more than 25 injured when the MUV they were travelling in collided with a lorry near Hindasakatte on Huliyaru Road in the taluk on Thursday evening.

Seven people died on the spot while four others breathed their last in a hospital. Eyewitnesses said there were more than 25 people in the MUV.

Police said that the people were returning to their villages after purchasing clothes and grocery for Ugadi in Hiriyur. A case has been registered by the rural police station.

The dead have been identified as Ramesh, 22, a resident of Nayakarakottige in Hiriyur taluk, Ummanna, 55, of Hindasakatte, Mylari, 25, of Handiganadu, Tippeswamy, 35, of Hindasakatte, Karim Sahab, 18, of Byaramadu, Devamma, 45, Mahesh, 35, Hanumanna, 45, and Sharadamma, 60, all residents of Chigalikatte, and Balajja,70, of Seegehatti. Another man aged 35 years is yet to be identified.

The injured are Hanumanthappa of Bharampura, Satish of Byaramadu, Chikkamma and Krishnamurthy of Hindasakatte, Prakash of Nayakarakottige, Shivaraj and Neelamma of Chigalikatte, Balakka, Pavitra and Suresh of Badagollarahatti, Malakappa of Babburu and Manjula of Iddalanagenahalli.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital.

Last year on the eve of Ugadi festival, six people died in an accident that occurred near Kalavibaagi on Challakere Road.
