The police have recovered 214 gold coins, 110 gold beads, two ‘bugadis’ (earrings) and six gold pendants, believed to be of the Moghul and Vijayanagar periods in the town on Saturday.

The gold coins, which had signatures in Arabic language and images of Hindu gods and goddesses carved on them, were found by workers at a construction site belonging to Kappagal Veeresh on March 7.

The workers, who were upset that the owner did not share the treasure with them even a week after they found it, picked a fight with him. The public alerted the police who raided Veeresh’s house and recovered the antiquities.

A case has been registered against Veeresh for not informing the authorities about the historically significant coins and jewellery being found in his land.
