Huge turnout at 'swayamvar' for hearing impaired

Last Updated 24 March 2012, 19:16 IST

More than 100 hearing impaired matrimonial prospects from across the country participated in the 20th Pranay Milan Sammelan held in New Delhi on Saturday.

This is a unique platform which gives prospective alliances and their parents a chance to interact with each other and a freedom to choose their life partners.

The Delhi Foundation of Deaf Women (DFDW), along with Shaadi.com, a matrimonial service provider, has helped 300 couples get married in the last six years in Delhi.

“We are aware about certain segments of society who have to work harder to find the right partner, like in the case of the hearing impaired. The response to this event has been overwhelming and each year the turnout grows,” said Gourav Rakshit, business head of Shaadi.com.

Rajyalakshmi Rao, president of DFDW referred to the event as a special “swayamvar” for the hearing impaired.

“This matrimonial service started in 1991 and has extended to neighbouring states. We are proud to know that other local organisations are emulating our Pranay Milan Sammelan programme. We started this programme as there were no special marriage bureaus in Delhi that could help them in finding the right partner,” she said. The principal objective of this programme is to “come, see and suit yourself” enabling each person to be independent and choose their partners like others do.

“It is an innovative idea to organise such meetings for people who are compatible, when looks and family backgrounds take a backseat. I consider these married couples as icons who can encourage others like them to come forward.

“The hearing impaired are no different from any of us. They are already a part of the mainstream society,” said Justice G S Sistani, a guest of honour at the programme.Manpreet Brar, former miss India said, “DFDW has given tremendous joy to women and has empowered them by giving them the freedom to choose.”

Also, six couples with hearing impairment, who got married last year at the same programme, were felicitated for completing a year in marriage.

In 2011 around 125 couples got married with the help of this ‘swayamvar’.
