Leaves suicide note, cops probing case

Apparently depressed about her future, a 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping onto the tracks of Malviya Nagar metro station in south Delhi on Sunday morning, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Madhu, who hails from Rohtas district in Bihar. 

She was living with her sister and brother-in-law in Ghitorni in south Delhi for the last one year.

Witnesses say

Witnesses say she jumped on the tracks in front of a moving train going towards Jahangirpuri at platform No. 2 at 11.25 am.

“A train for Jahangirpuri was about to halt at the station when she jumped on the tracks. 

“The driver of the train applied emergency brakes, but she could not be saved,” said B S Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

Madhu was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre, where she was declared brought dead.

Police have found a suicide note from Neha, which says she blamed herself for the extreme step and did not want her family to be troubled by police.

“The matter is under investigation. We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the girl taking such a step,” Gurjar added.

Madhu was a second year Bachelor of Arts student in a private university in Bihar.

A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson said the incident affected metro services for 10 minutes. 

“Metro service was resumed after the track was cleared,” he said.

Delhi metro chief public relations officer Anuj Dayal said the recent spate of suicides on metro stations is unfortunate. 

He also appealed to passengers to help curtail such incidents.

“All passengers are requested to be alert on platforms when trains are approaching. 

“They must stop any fellow passenger who attempts to cross the yellow line before the train comes to a complete halt,” Dayal said.

Similar incident

Earlier, a 35-year-old man had committed suicide by jumping onto the tracks of Chandni Chowk metro station in central Delhi on March 2. 

The deceased was identified as Vinod Kumar of Varanasi.

On February 19, a 48-year-old man had died after he accidentally fell on the tracks of Sultanpur metro station in south Delhi and suffered severe head injuries.
 

The deceased was Jeevant Singh Negi, a resident of Aaya Nagar and who worked as a lower division clerk in the Union agriculture ministry.
