Political turmoil foils folk University inauguration in Haveri

The political bickering in the State had jeopardised the inauguration of the Janapada University, the first ever folklore university in the country.

In the 2010-11 budget, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had announced the setting up of the Janapada University at Gottagudi village of Shiggaon taluk in Haveri district.

However, the enthusiasm shown by the government in announcing the setting up of the university has not translated into action. The university is yet to be inaugurated.

The budgetary allocation of Rs 10 crore has been used for acquisition of land. The government has appointed Ambalike Hiriyanna as the vice-chancellor and C A Somashekarappa as registrar.

The travellers’ bungalow belonging to the Tourism Department on National Highway 4 at Gottagudi has been renovated and temporarily used as the administrative office. The necessary staff have also been appointed.

The vice-chancellor has taken charge and released the logo of the university. Work on a museum to portray folk culture has been initiated. Several activities in connection with the university have been taken up. But, there are no signs of its inauguration.

The date for inaugurating the university was fixed twice, but postponed on both occasions for unknown reasons. On the first occasion it was scheduled for December 19, 2011. Just a week before the inaugural date, it was postponed. The second time the inauguration was fixed was on January 29, 2012. But there was no further communication.

It is the Governor who has to fix the date. As he is also the acting Governor of Kerala, he is unable to pay attention to the inauguration of the varsity, say the vice-chancellor and Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

However, the turmoil in the BJP government is said to be the real reason behind the delay in the inauguration of the university. Besides, Bommai is keen that the university should be inaugurated with Yeddyurappa as the chief minister.
