“The conduct of the officials and elected representatives in not attending the sports programmes despite mentioning their names in the invitation do not augur well for promoting sports,” he noted after inaugurating the district-level Dasara sports meet at Visweswaraya stadium here on Sunday.
The ZP president said that officers and elected representatives should realise their responsibility of encouraging students to take part in sports. They should attend such programmes and promote sports.

Fading enthusiasm
He noted that sports used to receive much encouragement in rural parts in earlier days. People used to take part in kabaddi and other sports with enthusiasm. However, politics has crept into every sphere of human activity and the sporting spirit has taken a backseat. “Sports meets might become inconsequential in the absence of encouragement to sportpersons,” he warned.

Srinivas declared that he will gift sports uniform, personally to all the sportspersons who get selected to the division-level event.
President of the Zilla Panchayat standing committee on Social Justice, Balaji Chennaiah said that the period between 1970-80 was the “golden era” for the district in sports and lamented that the number of people taking part in sports was dwindling in recent days despite the government providing all facilities.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, for the first time, has released a sum of Rs 5 crore to each district to promote sports. The Sports Minister has laid foundation stone for construction of a sports complex in the City, recently. The minister has also consented to provide funds for renovation of Nehru Yuvaka Kendra and Rs 10 lakh has been sanctioned for renovation of shuttle cock indoor stadium, Balaji Chennaiah disclosed on the occasion.

Chennaiah further revealed that the sports hostel will be ready by the coming April and sporting talents in the age group of 5-12 years of the district can secure admission at the hostel and obtain training by experienced coaches. Enriched food will also be provided at the hostel and students of the district should make use of the benefit, he suggested.
