Maharashtra ATS kills 2008 Ahmedabad blast suspect

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday stormed into a squatters’ colony in Aurangabad city to nab Ahmedabad 2008 bombing suspects, leaving one suspect dead and two others injured. A police constable also sustained injuries in the encounter.

According to ATS officials here, a team was sent to arrest three suspected terrorists – Khaleel Khilji, Abrar Sheikh and Shakeel Ahmed – holed up in a slum in the Himayat Bag area. The suspects opened fire at the ATS team while trying to flee from the colony.

Police constable Arif Shaikh sustained a bullet injury on his shoulder while chasing the suspects. Khaleel, a resident of Gulmohar Colony, Ahmedabad, succumbed to bullet injuries. His accomplices Abrar and Shakeel along with constable Shaikh have been admitted to Government Medical Hospital.

The ATS has claimed that apart from carrying out serial bombings on July 26, 2008, in Ahmedabad that left 56 people dead and over 200 injured, the trio was also involved in the murder of a BJP leader.
