Two NATO soldiers gunned down by man in Afghan uniform

Last Updated 04 May 2018, 05:40 IST

Two NATO soldiers were gunned down today by a man in an Afghan army uniform in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, officials said here.

Two NATO soldiers were killed after the man in the Afghan Army uniform shot at them, a provincial Afghan official said on condition of anonymity.

Though the details of the morning attack is still sketchy, NATO said "an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing two service members".

The individual, who opened fire was killed when coalition forces returned fire. A joint Afghan and ISAF team is investigating the incident, the ISAF said in a statement.

The incident took place inside the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) compound in Lashkar Gah, the capital city in southern Helmand province. Most of the NATO troops based in Lasker Gah PRT are British soldiers.

ISAF did not give the nationalities of the soldiers killed, but the provincial official from Helmand confirmed that the incident took place inside British PRT.

The incident seems to be the latest in a string of attacks in which Afghan security forces have targetted NATO troops or colleagues.

Tension has incresed between the US and Afghanistan since the row over the burning of Qurans at an American base in Afghnistan in February sparked riots and attacks that killed more than 30 people, including six American soldiers.
