It’s a cruel and difficult world to survive. It’s a cruel and difficult world to find jobs. In this difficult economy, many of us find it harder than ever to cope with stress in the workplace. Regardless of occupation, seniority, or salary level, we spend more and more of our work days feeling frazzled and out of control, instead of alert and relaxed. Be it regular jobs or even freelancing, one is never at ease. There is a constant pressure, expectations and deadlines to meet.

There are two kinds of jobs that one can pursue depending on the field of work: freelancing and regular jobs. Both have their pros and cons. Being a freelancer means one is free from the shackles of a regular job but the flip side is that it takes a lot of hard work to become successful in this field. And as a freelancer, it is essential to build contacts for business work. One needs sufficient references – people who can work out as clients. One needs people to deliver the expected results.

Freelancers need effective networking. It simply means the act of creating, extending and maintaining personal connections with different types of people in the business. One can also choose his or her client, choose working hours and even choose the kind of work he or she wants to do. Chandramani Roy, a film-maker based in Mumbai, says, “The best part about being a freelancer is that one can grow as an individual, as a film-maker or as a technician also.

You get the time freedom, money freedom and creativity freedom when you are a freelancer. You can work on your terms.” On the other hand he adds, “There is a lot of uncertainity in freelancing. One may earn a good amount of money with one project but there is uncertainity of the next project. So there is little steady income.”

Compairing freelancing with a regular job, Adhar Tiwari, a retain planner with Sepia, says, “There is a lot of security in a regular job. Even parents want their child to be secure with a regular job and not be a freelancer because of the security factor. You have to put in a lot of effort in freelancing to find your next project. Luck is involved in freelancing but in regular jobs one needs to just give their best at the desk.”

Whatever one may say about freelancing, regular jobs are the ones which are preferred more by the youth as it gives the assurance of a regular payment by the end of the month. After devoting time to 9-5 jobs, one can also enjoy the evenings with friends and family. Whereas, it is not possible in the case of freelancing as one has to deliver the assigned project within a given time frame, leaving him or her working for weeks at a stretch .

Mandira Adak, a third year student of computer science (Honours) at the Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences seconds Adhar and says, “I have already got a job in an IT company. After passing out I want a regular job as it gives you a lot of security.” She adds, “One does feel tied down, that is true, in terms of time and creativity. But then job security is mandatory for me.”
