Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda was on Monday appointed the Floor Leader in the Legislative Council, making him the first ever chief minister to hold this post.

Council Chairperson D H Shankaramurthy announced Gowda’s appointment to the post which was held by former minister V S Acharya, who passed away on February 14. The announcement created a minor flutter in the House, with Congress MLC Veeranna Mattikatti stating that never in the history of the Upper House had the chief minister held the Floor Leader’s post.

Naxal problem

Home Minister R Ashoka said in the Council that there were “25 to 30 naxals” in the State, and that his department was making continued efforts to bring them to the “mainstream”.

To a query by MLC Ashwathnarayana (BJP) in the Council on the “taming on naxal activities in the State,” Ashoka said “sophisticated weapons” were not the only solution to the problem.
