Cops caution TMC leaders over Maoist threat

Keeping in mind the recent abductions in Odisha, particularly the kidnapping of tribal Biju Janata Dal legislator Jhina Hikaka by Maoists, the West Bengal police have started sensitising Trinamool Congress MPs, MLAs and other leaders particularly who are on the Maoists’ hit list.

The state government has decided to start a programme for the Trinamool Congress leaders, MPs and MLAs where they will be briefed by the police and experts so that they can avoid the impending danger.

“We have already started sensitising the political leaders, MLAs and MPs regarding the threat of abduction. This is a new threat and we need to brief them in detail regarding the dangers and loopholes. We would tell them regarding their personal safety and security,” Inspector General (Western Range) Gangeshwar Singh told Deccan Herald over the phone.

When asked about the details of the security arrangement, Singh said, “I cannot say in detail because this will expose our plan which is not correct as far as the security of the VIPs is concerned. As a part of the security arrangement, the leaders who are exposed to the threat are requested not to participate in any announced programme without the permission of the police, so that we can make special arrangements for the purpose.”
