The much-awaited Zilla Panchayat meeting on Wednesday to move a no-confidence motion against the president was cancelled for lack of quorum.

The meeting, called by the CEO under demand by the JD(S), was to begin at 11 am. The only members present at the fixed time, however, were S B Munivenkatappa and G Somashekhar of the JD(S). Toopalli Narayanaswamy arrived an hour late. No member of the Congress or the BJP attended the meeting. Even the independent members did not come.

P Rajendra Cholan, the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat, waited at the auditorium for an hour and then returned to his chamber.

Speaking to presspersons later, Cholan agreed the meeting did not take place as decided.

“Hardly any member attended the meeting. The only members who came urged that the meeting be postponed for lack of quorum. They were, however, informed that postponing the meeting was impossible.”

He added that a report would be submitted to the government that no meeting was conducted.

“A no-confidence motion cannot be moved till six months from now, according to the Panchayat Raj Act,” he said.
