Samajwadi Party workers continued to show utter disregard to law enforcement agencies, ignoring repeated warnings from their top leaders.

They are not only targeting their political rivals but have also been assaulting the men in khaki.

A group of SP workers reportedly assaulted a team of policemen and later chased them using the choicest of expletives when the cops tried to arrest two youths who werebeen charged with thrashing a government official. The incident happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district on Tuesday.

SP legislator Prem Prakash Singh was also present when the mob chased the policemen.

According to police sources, two youths had thrashed an accountant of the tehsil at Barjaj Bazaar on Tuesday morning, following a dispute. A report had been lodged in this connection. A team of policemen led by an inspector spotted the two at the local SP office and tried to arrest them.

But SP workers got angry and assaulted the police personnel. They had to flee from the spot to save themselves, reports said.

Barely a day before, the district police was coerced by SP leaders into releasing a suspect in an auto lifting case. Only a couple of days ago, an SP leader had raided a police outpost in Gonda district along with a large number of his supporters, forcing the policemen on duty there to flee.

The incidents have come as an embarrassment to new chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who has vowed to change the ‘gun culture’ with which the party was identified.

Both he and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav have warned of stern action against erring  party leaders and workers. Several SP workers were expelled on charges of hooliganism and indulging in violence.
