Private varsities Bill tabled

The Bills providing statutory status to two private universities - Manipal University and Arka University, were tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Friday.

Manipal University, promoted and owned by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), will come up in Doddaballapur. 

Arka, promoted by Arka Educational and Cultural Trust of Institutions, will come up on a 50-acre campus at Jakkasandra on Kanakapura Road.

There are already two private universities in the State- Azim Premji University and Alliance University.

An amendment bill, also tabled in the Assembly, aimed at paving way for the establishment of University of Agricultural Sciences and Horticultural Sciences at Shimoga to conduct study and research in the field of special crops in Malnad areas comprising Hassan, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Davangere districts.

The new university at Shimoga will cost the exchequer Rs 22.9 crore. The Karnataka State Open University (Amendment) Bill, 2012, proposed to fix the term of nominated members of the Board of Management of the University to three years was also tabled.
