Divorced mother strangles baby

Nine-month-old dies of asphyxia

A recently divorced 23-year-old woman has been arrested for killing her infant daughter in a fit of rage in Jyoti Nagar area of north-east Delhi, police said on Friday.

Shabana a resident of Kardam Puri, had strangled her nine-month-old daughter Aasma around 7 pm on Wednesday.

“Shabana was immediately overpowered by her mother Quresha, but Aasma had become unconscious by then. Quresha took the baby to a local doctor, who said her condition was serious and she needed emergency treatment at a hospital,” a senior police official said.

Quresha, along with her husband Ali Hasan then rushed Aasma to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

The body was shifted to GTB Hospital in Dilshad Garden and post-mortem was conducted.“The cause of death has been ascertained as asphyxia. She passed away as a result of antemortem compression of neck by hard and blunt object,” the official said.

A case has been registered against Shabana at Jyoti Nagar police station. She faces a charge of murder under section 302 of the IPC.

Police have also recorded the statement of Quresha and other family members to get to know the sequence of the incident.

Quresha told police that Shabana had married Anees, 30, a resident of Chand Bagh, around two years ago, but their marriage was on the rocks for past one year.

Shabana used to come to her maternal home in Kardam Puri after the fights and return after some time, but they had been living separately for the past 20 days. The situation worsened when Anees sent a letter last week saying their marriage was over.

“Shabana apparently acted out of depression over recent events in her life. However, it would not justify the death of the nine-month-old baby. The court will decide the future course of action,” he added.
