Man kills daughter for a nightout

Last Updated 05 April 2012, 18:53 IST

Furious over a minor girl’s decision to spend the night with her friends, a father in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district killed her soon after she returned home by hitting her with a sharp-edged object, police said.

According to sources,  Balram Singh, resident of Gadarian Purwa in Kanpur district, was away to attend a function Tuesday night.

His 16-year-old daughter Ranjana (name changed) persuaded her mother to send her on “girl’s night out” with her friends, thinking that she can be home before her father arrives Wednesday morning.

However, Ranjana was delayed  and Balram was home before her.
“Balram became very angry when he came to know that Ranjana was out for the whole night,” sources said quoting his wife Kusuma.

He picked up a sharp object and started to hit the girl soon after she returned home. She died of her injuries on the spot.

On the basis of the FIR given by his wife Kusuma, Balram was arrested.
He remorselessly argued with the police during interrogation justifying his action as the “right thing”.

“My daughter had brought dishonour to the family...she was rightly punished,”  Balram told the police during interrogation. Police also suspect it to be a case of honour killing.

Incidents of honour killings –of lovers or couples for marrying against their family’s wishes—are increasingly reported in Uttar Pradesh, especially from the western region.

The all-powerful “Khaps” or caste panchayats, have made it clear that they would not allow love marriages or marriages within the same “Gotra”.
