Everyone wants younger-looking skin. Unfortunately, even the most effective face creams can’t turn back the clock, despite reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Here are some steps you can follow so that the skin looks healthy for longer.

Understanding your skin is primary. Our body’s largest organ is made up of three layers. The outer epidermis contains pigment cells, the stratum corneum surface layer is made of flat, dead skin cells, and the basal layer. The middle dermis layer contains blood vessels, nerves, oil glands, collagen fibres and elastin. The inner subcutaneous layer contains blood vessels, hair follicles and fat cells.

There are a number of things that determine how quickly the skin ages, including genetic factors such as your natural skin type, environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight and external factors such as whether or not you smoke.

In general, pale skins wrinkle faster than darker skin that are protected by increased amounts of pigment and lipids.

Age is a vital factor

Your skin is very different at 20 to how it is at 70. Here’s how you can look after your skin and avoid getting acne and rashes. Your skin retains a youthful glow and the epidermis is still plump and dewy while you’re in your 20s. So:

- Get into the habit of using a cleanser and toner — especially if you wear make-up every day.

- Use a moisturiser with a high SPF (around 15) daily. Penetrative UVA rays will already start to take the bounce out of collagen fibres and elastin coils in the dermis.
Dermatologists say up to 80 per cent of all ageing may be due to sunlight.

- It is also a good time to give up cigarettes. Smoking stops oxygen getting to your skin cells and can cause premature ageing, not to mention the lines around the mouth.

- Avoid yo-yo dieting. This is another contributing factor to premature wrinkling, over-stretched, baggier skin.

- Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.

In case you’re suffering from a bad case of acne or pimples, read on to find out how to get past it.

Factors aggravating acne

- Continual touch and picking at an on- going irritation, pressure applied, picking, wearing tight clothes and rubbing increase the spread of acne and heighten the risk of scarring.

- Cooking and deep frying food leads to flying grease or oil particles in the air and fumes. It can worsen an acne condition. Avoid it as much as possible.

- Intense heat and humidity often lead to excessive sweating. This, coupled with low evaporation of sweat, irritates the acne condition.

- Toothpastes and asthma and cold remedies contain iodides, bromides and fluorides. Consumption of these items can result in an outbreak of acne and facial hair.

- Using the wrong cosmetics. Unfortunately, some skin creams, make-up products contain derivativess of fatty acids and oils which are potent acne-stimulants. These are the biggest culprits among skin- care products.

- Prolonged stress and anxiety. Acne condition is also worsened by stress. For example, students appearing for examination have to cope with a sudden outbreak of acne.

Dos and dont’s
