Last Updated 07 April 2012, 16:55 IST

The city municipal council (CMC) has decided to install waters meters in a phased manner across the city. The cost of implementation would be recovered in 10 installments from residents. At the same time, CMC members decided to urge for a review in the hike of monthly water cess to Rs 120 imposed by the state government.

The decisions were taken at a special meeting chaired by CMC president M P Arunkumar here on Saturday.

Speaking at the meeting, water supply and sewerage board official Raju said there are 26,000 families in CMC limits. Drinking water is being supplied to 17,500 houses. Each water meter would cost around Rs 1000. The total cost estimated for the project is Rs 200 lakh.

While the CMC would bear half the cost, the remaining would have to be borne by residents. However, it was unclear as to who would provide the grants for installing water meters.

CMC members said that Rs 120 would be collected during each month from all the houses.
While the usage of water is not being taken into consideration, it would be unfair on people using less water, they said. Installing meters would help the residents, they said.

The city is being supplied with 28 MLD of water. The government is not providing any support in maintenance work. But, Rs 6 crore has been released for laying new pipelines.
Members Puttanakaiah, Hosahalli Boregowda, Nagamma, Padmavathi, Venkatesh and others were present.
