Post-mortem report awaited
Last Updated 08 September 2009, 19:24 IST

Mohammad Hussain Zargar, the deceased, was an activist of the Majlis-e-Mushawarat Shopian (MMS), which is spearheading an agitation demanding justice for the Shopian victims.

Asiya, a teenaged girl and Neelofar, her sister-in-law, were allegedly raped and killed on May 29.

Police could not identify and arrest the culprits. However, the special investigation team (SIT), which is probing the case, had arrested five police officers as per the directions of the state high court for destroying evidence.

Zargar went missing on Saturday and his family lodged a complaint at the local police station.

On Tuesday evening, his body was recovered from an orchard. As the news about this spread, protest demonstrations were held.

The demonstrators alleged that Zargar was murdered by the same persons, who were behind the Shopian incident.

However, the police said they could not say anything till the post-mortem report was made available.

Govt accepts demand

MMS did not allow the doctors in Shopian hospital to conduct the post-mortem.
They demanded that a team of doctors from government medical college Srinagar should conduct the post-mortem. The state government has accepted the demand.
Inspector general of police (IGP) Farooq Ahmad said a team of doctors from Srinagar will visit Shopian on Wednesday and conduct the postmortem.

The incident occurred hours after chief minister Omar Abdullah addressed a public meeting at Kareva-Zawoora village, 3 km  from Shopian, assuring the people that the culprits behind the Shopian incident would be arrested as early as possible.
