Stricter law against child abuse sought

Last Updated 12 April 2012, 19:36 IST

The SOS Chidren’s Villages  of India, voluntary organization looking after about 6000 abandoned and orphaned children across the country, has demanded stricter laws against physical abuse of children in the wake of Baby Afreen’ death.

“Baby Afreen battled for life for three days in the hospital, but finally surrendered to the severe head injuries, abrasions, bite and cigarette wounds inflicted all over her body by her own father. She was tortured for being a girl! It is heart breaking to see the country heading towards such heinous crimes against children, especially girl children,” said the organization. “In spite of the different Government policies and the setting up of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the country faces a major social imbalance in terms of girl child protection,” says Rakesh Jinsi,  secretary general of SOS Children’s Villages of India.
