Greed for dowry claims one life

A newly wed woman fell prey to her in-laws’ greed for money. The lady who was fighting for life at a private hospital in Mangalore since few days after being burnt by her in-laws, allegedly for dowry, breathe her last on Sunday evening.

The deceased is Sowmya (27) from Podikal of Kumbdaje village of Kasargod who was married to Ravi Moolya (32) of Manimajalu in Kalamja village of Sullia taluk, 10 months ago.

During the wedding Sowmya’s parents had given her 10 sovereigns of gold as dowry and some more quantity of gold was yet to be given to her. Seeing that the promised amount of gold has not been given to the bride, Sowmya’s father-in-law Vasu Moolya, mother-in-law Lakshmi and husband Ravi started harassing her.

Ravi who is employed in a private company in Bangalore had come to his native village just a week ago with Sowmya and meanwhile, the Moolya family got together to lock Sowmya in a room and set her ablaze.

She was taken to a private hospital in Mangalore in a critical state.

However, some days ago, Ravi had called Sowmya’s parents and told that Sowmya had burnt herself and hence she will be taken to Mysore hospital.

However, he had again called and said that she will be taken to Mangalore.

Sowmya’s parents and maternal uncle have lodged a complaint against Vasu Moolya, Ravi and Lakshmi.
