Hope for rejuvenating temple tanks in the district might be a reality soon. Recently, the chief minister Sadananda Gowda has shown interest in rejuvenating the temple tanks in the district.

“Apart from rejuvenating the temple tanks, the Chief Minister is also interested in generating employment to the people of the district. This is a alternate way to tackle drought-crisis.

The work on temple tanks will start within two months,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Kolar Manoj Kumar Meena. The district has many temple tanks including one each at Bharathinagar, Basappa Chatra, near Chitravathi and three each at Rangasthala and Nandi Gram.

Kumudendu Maharshi Youth Association and Environmentalists recently cleaned some temple tanks under the sanitation drive. They had also requested the district and taluk administration to maintain the temple tanks.

Their repeated requests at last are considered by the administration and the government will take steps to rejuvenate the temple tanks in the neglected condition.

“There is acute shortage of water in all over Kolar and Chikkaballapur. The ground-water level has depleted considerably and there might be literally no water in next two years.

But if action is taken to collect water in the temple tanks, water-crisis can be handled well. There is need to form special programmes on borewells to solve water problem.

Government should release more grants to sink borewells,” said Yaluvahalli Sonnegowda, Convener of District Silk Farming Welfare Forum, speaking to Deccan Herald.

“Pushkarnis are cleaned or filled with water only during fairs and festivals. But this should be a continuous process. If it is filled with water all the time, even the animals and birds will benefit from this. It can also be utilised for various other purposes.

There are various kinds of temple tanks including a octagonal pushkarni at Rangasthala. Rejuvenating the temple tanks is also important as it has historical importance,” he added.
