A 27-year-old Finnish national committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the multi-level parking area of Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday.

According to police, Arttu Karlella was mentally unstable. They found his diary from his rucksack.

“After reading a few pages from the diary, we believe that he was mentally unstable. The Finnish embassy also agreed that Arttu was not mentally healthy,” said a police officer.

Strolling at airport

Police officials had seen Arttu strolling at the airport without his shirt at 7.30 am. They took him to the Finnish Embassy and left him with officials at 9.30 am.

“But Arttu managed to return to the airport and jumped from the sixth floor at 1.30 pm. We were unaware that he has returned to the airport,” added the officer.

When police reached the site of the incident, they saw him lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

A private security guard at the multi-level parking area at Terminal 3 had informed police that he tried stopping Arttu from jumping.

Police have informed the Finnish embassy about Arttu’s death. He had arrived in India on December 31 last year. His visa was to expire on June 30.
