'Win has rejuvenated me'

Having kick-started the season on a high with a title-winning show at the just-concluded Asian Billiards Championship, Pankaj Advani said he felt mighty satisfied with his exploits in Goa.

“It’s one of the tournaments where I felt extremely happy with the way I played,” said Advani at a felicitation function organised by the Karnataka State Billiards Association here on Tuesday. “At times, you win titles but you won’t be satisfied with the way you played. There are also times when you play really well but you end up losing.

“I actually struggled during the initial phase of the tournament. I wasn’t able to execute the things I wanted to. But as the event progressed I found my touch. The semifinal against Praput chaithanasukan was a really difficult match. He played really well, and I had to be at my sharpest always. I needed three century breaks to keep him quiet.“Although I won the final 6-3 against Thawat Sujaritthuarkarn, that match too wasn’t easy. Considering I failed to win a single title in 2011, I needed it to regain my confidence. A win at the start of the season always helps and I hope to feed off from it,” added Advani who won the Asian crown for a record fifth time.

On Thursday the 26-year-old Bangalorean would be leaving for Doha to take part in the Asian Snooker Championship. Asked if the quick switch from billiards to snooker would hamper his title chances, Advani said he has practised hard in the last two weeks and hopes to go all the way. “It’s not always easy to switch from billiards to snooker at such a short notice. However, I’ve done my homework pretty well. It’s just a matter of executing them. I’ve not set any targets; just going to take it match my match.”

Meanwhile, KSBA, as part of its continued policy to promote cue sports, announced that they would be bearing the visa and entry fee charges of Chitra Magimairaj and R Umadevi Nagaraj who would be representing the country in the WLBSA World Championship to be held in Cambridge, United Kingdom from April 20-25.
