In spite of Bangalore having a variety of shopping malls, the youth here seems to be content even with the roadside shops that cater to their fashion needs. Fashion does not always come expensive, it comes cheap too! This act of ‘street-smart shopping’ is mastered by the college students of Bangalore who ensure that they are dressed to kill.

With the summer break in and the constant need for students to ‘hang out’, when asked about their favourite reasonably priced shopping spots, the most common answers given are Commercial Street and Brigade Road. Few shopaholics talk about their favourite bargain markets and their personal style ‘funda’ this summer.

“Places like Dubai Plaza on Brigade Road and a few shops near Jyoti Nivas College are excellent to shop at, for girls,” says Sera Maria, a student of travel and tourism. She
justifies her answer saying that it is because of the low prices, good fit of clothing and also because these places are up-to-date with the latest fashion trends. When asked what she wants to sport this summer, she answers, “Funky shoes and summer dresses help one beat the heat.”

Another student, Teena Vellara, a student of St Joseph’s College of Commerce, responds with enthusiasm saying, “I love street shopping, the reason being, if these clothes do get damaged too, one can discard them without feeling guilty about the price paid.” She adds, “I’m looking forward to wearing bright coloured shorts with tank tops, maxi dresses and jumpsuits this summer.”

Shopping at local stores in various areas like Jayanagar, OPH Road and more also helps one come out with clothes of unique styles that catch one’s attention. The best part is that these designs are so different that it’s hard to find another person sporting the same outfit you have just bought! “Street shopping gives me the best deals and a string of shops with a wide variety to choose from,” says Joseph Mathew, a student of business.

These flea markets are a dream come true for the shoppers. Many stores sell a variety of western and ethnic wear, shoes, wallets, accessories, and more. “With the fixed amount of money we get from our parents, shopping in places like Avenue Road and MG Road fits into my budget,” says Akhil George.

These trendy boys feel that one can strike a style statement this summer by wearing baggy shorts, flip flops, light coloured t-shirts  and a good pair of aviators.

So boys and girls, try something new this summer! Try street shopping and find stuff there that you can mix and match.

And who knows? You might just end up finding something that you can’t wait to put on. With the wide variety of choice available and affordable prices, even those not very fond of shopping can’t resist the temptation to shop till they drop.
