As the D-day for electing the new mayor draws closer, Katriguppe corporator D Venkatesh Murthy and Banashankari ward corporator A H Basavaraj have emerged as the strong contenders for the top post.

The elections are scheduled to take place on April 26 and the race is hotting up with the candidates leaving no stone unturned to convince their leaders to make one of them the new Mayor of the City.

This time the post is reserved for the Backward Caste-2A category and there are as many as 35 corporators from the BJP belonging to the community.

To woo the corporators from his community, Venkatesh Murthy had sponsored a trip to Hong Kong last month, whereas Basavaraj reportedly has the backing of Home Minister R Ashoka.

In addition, Shakambari Nagar ward corporator, B Somashekar is in the race. Housing Minister V Somanna is reportedly pushing for the candidature of Shantha Kumari but her prospects have turned bleak after the recent Lokayukta raid on her.

It was learnt that Chamarajpet corporator B V Ganesh and Chikkpet corporator A L Shivakumar too are among the aspirants.
