Upset over the government, which is not increasing the daily allowance of the child and their monthly  honararium, teachers and assistants of 30 creches in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have threatened to quit their job.

The government gives measly Rs 2.08 per day per child and pays  them a monthly honararium of Rs 1250.

At a meeting held at  Prajna Counselling Centre here on Tuesday, they said that they have no other choice but to close  the creches if the governmnet does not increase the honararium and daily need.

“The creche, which I work is a shed with asbestos sheets. The summer heat is unbearable. I too do not come from a well- to- do family and I have to spend my salary for the creche as I cannot let the children suffer. How can the government be so irresponsible,” questioned  Thunga of Pragathi Crèche in Ambabailu in Puttur.

Sarita who looks after a creche at Guthinabailu says that in the training programme for the teachers they were told to ask children about their requirement and serve the same to them.

“However, government is playing a nasty joke by alloting Rs 2.08 for a three time meal. We have not failed to do our duty. We ask the children what items they want to eat and do the best we can,” she says.

Sundari of Spoorti Centre in Nitoor says that she runs the cresche in a rented building and has to pay Rs 500 a month as rent.

“We are not paid our salary on time. We are made to run the cresche without any basic amenities. I have not quit my job as I do not want the children to suffer, but in condition how can I continue,” she complaints.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dakshina Kannada District Council For Child Welfare President Vasudev Kamath said that he has appealed to Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda to do the needful and the DC has promised to seek help from corporate and private organisations to get aid to run the cresches.
