Dumping yard in the making

Last Updated 24 April 2012, 17:53 IST

It is not a dump yard space allotted by the local governing body but this open space at Bottatharu SC Colony in Puttur is slowly becoming a dump yard due to lack of scientific waste disposal method in place.

The strong smell emanating from the garbage is a nuisance to the residents of the colony and now the residents fear the spread of contagious diseases in the region.

The SC colony has more than 20 houses and the TMC had put up a dustbin in the colony. However, the garbage dumped inside the bin has not been removed for the last one month.

The bin is overflowing and one can see garbage littered everywhere around the bin. The litter outside the bin makes the space look like a dump yard.

The waste generated at homes are dumped in the spot and the residents have asked the authorities to take necessary steps to clear the space. However, this has not yielded any result so far.

Now, with the area receiving rains, the matter has gone from bad to worse.

The colony residents said “the garbage from the bin has not been cleared for the last one and half months. When we ask the civic workers to clear it they ask us to complain with the Puttur TMC.”
The residents say that the only solution to this menace is to have a permanent and new site to dispose garbage.

A TMC member alleged that the monsoon is fast approaching. However, the TMC has not taken any measure to clean the drains in its jurisdiction. The sewage water is seen flowing on the road. The officials are not responding to the woes of the people.

The colony residents said “the TMC president Kamala Anand hails from Dalit community. She has a responsibility to solve the problems related to dumping of the garbage. The TMC should initiate measure to see that contagious diseases do not spread in the region.”
