Relish the taste of home

Last Updated 27 April 2012, 14:31 IST

South Bangalore may be bustling with eateries, yet the foodies here always have a soft spot for those that offer home-made food for a reasonable price.

One such place is ‘Shree Venkateshwara North Karnataka Hotel’.Started four years ago by Susheel Kumar, the eatery is located in Jayanagar 4th Block, and is known for its
authentic North Karnataka delicacies.

“I have always been interested in the hotel business and wanted to spread the real taste of North Karnataka. This pushed me to start something of my own. In all these years, I have got a really good response from my customers and it has encouraged me to expand my business,” says Susheel, who recently started another branch in Basavanagudi.

With a small seating area and a kitchen on the floor above, the eatery is crowded during the afternoons with professionals thronging the place for meals.

“I come here with my colleagues at least once a week. They serve fresh food and is very hygienic. What’s really nice is the ambience, which is very friendly and homely,” says Ganesh, a regular customer.

The menu mainly comprises meals, which allow the customer to get a taste of many dishes in a single plate. A popular choice is the ‘special meals’, which comes with a green salad, sweet, three types of curries, three rotis, rice, sambhar, rasam, curd, buttermilk, papad and butter. Those with a small appetite can go in for the regular meals or just the rice-sambhar meals. “We are known for our vegetable sambhar. We make the sambhar powder, which brings out the authentic raditional flavours,” he adds.

The jolada roti is a must-try here. The soft rotis made out of corn go well with brinjal gravy. “This combination is very popular in North Karnataka, especially the brinjal gravy. We don’t serve this vegetable in the meals but we make it when a customer asks for it,” he adds.

Making rotis is an art by itself. The cooks never use a rolling pin to get round rotis, they do it with hands.

“This is very common in ‘North Karnataka’, the real softness comes out when the roti is made by hand,” he says.

“A lot of people from North Karnataka come here asking for delicacies like the drumstick palya, holiges etc. I ensure that they are made and served. We have good cooks from my native place who bring out the authentic taste,” he says. The items here are priced from Rs 10 to Rs 65.

The eatery is open on all days except Monday. For details, call 9945612307.
