Udupi is all set to control illegal autos in City

MLA Raghupathy Bhat says, rules will be relaxed for issuing license

MLA Raghupathy Bhat said that permit to run autos within the city limits will be issued to the auto rickshaws which had obtained license from 1996 to Jan 31, 2012.

Speaking to the media persons he said that a notification was issued by the then erstwhile Dakshina Kannada District Commissioner banning auto rickshaws from plying in the city limits owing to problems of traffic snarls in the city.

Due to this so far there were only 700 auto rickshaws running legally in the city limits and nearly 3,300 auto rickshaws were running illegally without the permit within the city. Same was the case in Kundapur, Saligrama and Karkala taluk.

However auto rickshaws licensed from February 1 to till date are not considered under the provision, he added.

Besides considering the problems encountered by the auto rickshaw drivers like compulsory installation of gas kit, it has been made mandatory to introduce meters in auto rickshaws.

There are as many as 17 auto rickshaw stands that have come up illegally in Manipal.

The issue has been raised with the department concerned. Action will be taken to legalise them, Bhat said.

“A sum of Rs seven lakhs has been earmarked to build an auto stand at Kamath Circle in Manipal in association with Manipal University. Manipal Hospital has extended the health card insurance facilities to as many as 529 auto rickshaw drivers in Udupi. Earlier the facility was limited only to about 583 auto rickshaw drivers in Manipal alone. The facility is extended to the family of five at the cost of Rs 35,000. Manipal University has invested Rs 5.80 lakhs and auto drivers have been asked to pay Rs 25 each which amounts to a total sum of Rs 27,800,” he added.

Bhat said that Tenkaneediyur Gram Panchayat lacks interest to solve the issue of water shortage. He said Tenkaneediyur Gram Panchayat failed to attend the meet called to discuss the issue of water problem and the PDO who was present in the meeting was unable to take any decision with regard to the payment of the pending amount, he added.

He also said measures will be taken to provide bus facilities on the DC office route at End Point, he said.
