Mysore gets first dalit woman mayor

The Mysore City Corporation on Monday elected its first dalit woman mayor.

Rajeshwari M C, a Congress candidate, won the election to the post reserved for a Scheduled Caste woman. Mahadevappa (JD-S) was elected deputy mayor.

The Congress and JD(S) joined hands to defeat the BJP candidate. Rajeshwari bagged 48 votes while Mahadevamma, also from the Congress, failed to garner any votes.

Two candidates  – one from JD(S) and another from BJP, were in the fray for the post of deputy mayor. BJP corporator M K Shankar got only 21 votes while Mahadevappa won by securing 47 votes.
