A 53-year-old man has been arrested for killing his daughter-in-law at Neb Sarai in south Delhi after she spurned his sexual advances, police said on Wednesday.

Arshad Ali, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was absconding since Sabina was found lying dead in a pool of blood at her residence on April 29.

“He was held on Tuesday after a tip-off that he would come to meet his sister at Hauz Rani. The weapon of offence, a blood-stained knife, Arshad’s blood-stained shirt and mobile phone have been recovered,” said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).

Sabina used to stay with her husband Sabir and two-year-old daughter as tenant on the first floor of the premises for the past one-and-a half years, while Arshad was residing on the second floor.

The incident came to light when the son of Sabina’s landlord, Mohammad Salim, approached police around 8:45 pm on April 29 reporting that he saw Arshad in a blood-stained shirt leaving the premise with a blood-stained knife in his hand.

A case of murder was registered on Salim’s statement and investigation taken up.

“On Tuesday, we received information that Arshad would come to Jamunwala Park in Hauz Rani to meet his sister. Immediately, a team laid trap around Jamunwala Park and apprehended Arshad,” Sharma said.

During interrogation, Arshad confessed the crime, and disclosed that he was infatuated with Sabina and wanted to have a physical relation with her.

He went to her room when she was alone and made sexual advances towards her. She rejected his suggestion  and slapped him.

“On this, Arshad got furious and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife and escaped from the spot,” she added.
