A 33-year-old French national on Thursday succumbed to the injuries sustained after a scuffle on board a train at the Karnal railway station in Haryana.

Franck Wilfred, the victim, was reportedly pushed off a train after being beaten mercilessly on Sunday. The Railway police found Wilfred on the platform, profusely bleeding , and admitted him to the Post Graduate Institute (PGI) in Chandigarh. He died of head injuries, doctors said.

The French embassy officials will collect his body from the hospital after post mortem and necessary formalities are done. The traveling ticket examiner (TTE) Manoj Kumar, who allegedly beat Wilfred  has been arrested and charged with Franck’s murder.

However, motive behind the incident is still not clear. During interrogation, Kumar, who is in police custody, has denied the charges. Certain unknown miscreants had beaten the French national after altercation, he maintained.

A copy of Wilfred’s passport, including a photocopy of tourist visa papers, medical prescription, camera pouch and two packets of cigarettes were found in Kumar's possession. He was on duty in the same compartment of the Amritsar-bound Sachkhand Express, in which Wilfred was travelling.

Sources said, Wilfred was undergoing treatment for some unknown ailment at a hospital in New Delhi. The police said the deceased had lost his passport and travel documents in New Delhi. A complaint in this regard was lodged at a New Delhi police station as well.

Wilfred was travelling with temporary papers given by the embassy. The police said prima facie, the suspect, Kumar, is guilty of the crime, adding that he was arrested on suspicion after he failed to explain how Franck’s documents were in his possession. A police team has been sent to Nanded, the station from which the Sachkhand Express started, to gather more details about the case.
