Child marriage foiled; 5 held

Chaudappa, Child Development Programme Officer, Bangalore South Taluk raided a marriage hall in Vijayanagar on Monday morning and stopped a marriage, saying the bride was a minor.

Sandhya (17), a resident of Moodalapalya and daughter of Nagaraj and Geetha, was being married to Nanjundaswamy, a resident of Magadi Road at Lakshmi Narasimha Kalyana Mantapa.

Choudappa has lodged a complaint with the Vijayanagar police. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act. The police have arrested Nagaraj, Geetha, Nanjundaswamy and his parents, Jayanna and Mahadevamma.

However, the parents claimed that their daughter was 18 years old and that the marriage had taken place before the raid.
