A royal touch

Actress Kareena Kapoor is likely to play the role of Begum Samru in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s upcoming period film.

Tigmanshu, who is basking in the glory of recent hits like Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, had first approached Rani Mukherjee for this film, sources said.

The period film is based on the life of Begum Samru, who started her career as a nautch girl in India in the 18th century and eventually became the ruler of Sardhana, a principality near Meerut. Later on, she played a key role in the political power struggle in India in the 18th and 19th century.

According to sources, Kareena had liked Tigmanshu’s latest movies — Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster — and had wanted to work with the director. “It is too early to talk about the details of the film but Kareena is definitely excited about this film,” said an official spokesperson from the director’s side in a statement.

Begum Samru was the head of a professionally-trained mercenary army, inherited from her European mercenary husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre. This mercenary army consisted of Europeans and Indians. She is also regarded as the only Catholic ruler in India as she ruled the principality of Sardhana in the 18th and 19th century.

 ‘Sunidhi is numero uno’

On April 24, Lata Mangeshkar completed 70 years of singing. It’s no mean feat indeed. In a chat with the media, the veteran songstress had a lot to say about the present-day singers. When asked who would she choose between Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal, she said, “Sunidhi can sing all kinds of songs. And her voice and style have all the elements that the current generation likes. Shreya is good but she is number two. Sunidhi is numero uno.”

And what does she think  of Sonu Nigam? She answered, “He is good but has a thin voice, which the film-makers must be matching with the actor he is lending his voice to. However, that was the case in the olden days too.”
