A 22-year-old law student has been arrested at his Dilshad Garden residence in north-east Delhi for harassing a woman by uploading her mobile phone number on a fictitious Facebook account.

Shubham Kansal, a final year student of a law school in Uttar Pradesh, had also uploaded “raunchy and provocative” photographs of some unidentified woman and kept an open invitation for friendship on the social networking website.

“Numerous people also called on the mobile phone number after visiting the Facebook account,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, deputy commissioner of Police (crime and railways), said here on Saturday.

An investigation was taken up after the woman approached the crime branch on March 6 after being continuously harassed over a period of time. Initial enquiry revealed that the Facebook account was opened in some other woman’s name.

The woman’s cellphone number was given as the contact number. Working on the information available on the account, the police located Shubham, who turned out to be an obsessed former school classmate of the victim. He was arrested on Friday evening and a case under appropriate sections of the Information Technology Act was registered.

During sustained examination, Shubham told the police that he and the complainant were classmates at a school in east Delhi.

“Shubham wanted to have a relationship with the complainant, but things never worked out his way. He was unable to get over her. So in February, he uploaded her phone number on the fictitious Facebook account inviting everybody for friendship,” Jain said. He juiced up the account with provocative photographs. The result was that the woman received scores of unsolicited phone calls from men, the DCP added.
