Harman plans Pune development centre

Harman International (India), a wholly owned subsidiary of the US-based Harman International Industries Inc., is setting up a new development centre in Pune to design, develop, test and assemble end-to-end branded audio and infotainment solutions for Indian car market.

The Pune facility of Herman India, headquartered in Bangalore, will be the company’s second centre in India after the research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore set up two years ago.

The Pune centre is being set up mainly to cater to the $250 million multi-year contract of supplying branded audio and infotainment solutions to Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile company. This was disclosed by Harman International, Chairman, President & CEO Dinesh C Paliwal in an interview in with Deccan Herald.   

“The agreement with Tatas marks the first time an Indian automaker will bring premium branded audio and infotainment systems to the domestic market,” said Paliwal.

At the Pune facility, Harman will leverage its engineering and development teams to create custom audio, navigation, and multimedia solutions for vehicles across Tata’s model lines. The company will also start manufacturing audio and infotainment solutions after one year to cater to the needs of other  companies. Harman International, a $4.3 billion company employing 13,000 people worldwide, designs, manufactures and delivers a wide range of premium audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, professional and consumer lifestyle markets.  With a  legacy of more than 60 years, it sells a variety of audio solutions under key brands including JBL, Harman Kardon, AKG, Infinity, Lexicon, etc.

While Harman is well known in the professional audio segment, the company’s products are lesser known in the home and consumer entertainment markets in India. To make an inroad there Harman has tied up with the consumer electronics chain Croma and Reliance Digital who will create separate Harman experience zones in their outlets. It has also signed music director A R Rahaman as its brand ambassador in India.
