RTE Act: 1,645 seats available in DK, 1,061 in Udupi

Admissions can be continued till month end; vacant seats can be filled till August

The number of seats which will be available in Dakshina Kannada schools following the 25 per cent seats reservation for implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act is 1,645.

The number of seats available in all schools (except minority unaided schools) has been announced on Tuesday.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, SSA Project coordinator Shivaprakash said the availability of the seats has been calculated based on statistics from the District Information System for Education (DISE) for 2011-12.

The reserved seats will be made available for the stdents from disadvantaged and weaker sections, SC/ST, OBCs, street children, migrant children, children with special needs, differently abled children and children with HIV. The parents will have to produce appropriate certificate like caste and income certificate from Tahsildar, certificate from the health department for the HIV infected.

The physically challenged children will normally have an Identity card which, they will have to produce during the admission process. The number of schools where seats are reserved in Bantwal taluk is 33, in Belthangady is 10, Mangalore urban is 21, Mangalore taluk 33, Moodabidri—10, Puttur—27 and Sullia—9.

He said the schools were asked to issue application forms on May 10. The admission can be continued till month end.

The admission for the seats which are not filled can continue upto August.

“It is the right of every child to have access to neighbourhood school. We have already identified neighbourhood schools in the district in each and every locality. The neighbourhood for lower primary school should be within one kilometre and for the higher primary school should be within three kilometres.”

Details of how parents may apply for the reserved seats will be available in the schools and in the Block Development Office.

In Udupi

The total number of seats available in Udupi district schools following 25 per cent seat reservation as part of Right to Education Act is 1,061 in as many as 74 schools.

DDPI Nagendra Madhyastha said the total number of seats are available in about 74 schools in the district that come under five zones barring minority unaided schools. Applications are available at the Block Education Officers offices concerned and parents can approach BEO offices in their areas for details.

Under Udupi zone, as many as 259 seats are reserved in 18 schools. In Karkala, about 149 seats are reserved in 13 schools. In Brahmavar zone, 279 seats are reserved in 17 schools. In Kundapur, as many as 220 seats are reserved in 15 schools and under Byndoor zone, about 154 seats are reserved in 11 schools.

The DDPI said a helpline number is notified for the district, for the parents to get any information. However, it will be installed on Wednesday, he said.
