Culture, sports programmes limping in Udupi due to lack of funds

Panchayat Yuva Kreeda aur Khel Abhiyan is yet to take off in the district, in which 14 GPs will be covered

A Central government sponsored programme, Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Shakthi Sangha was introduced at the Gram Panchayath level to propagate cultural and sports activities among rural youths in a much bigger way. Each Sangh has 30 members besides 2 representatives.
There are as many as 146 Sanghas introduced in the district. The ongoing activities fail to get the expected results due to shortage of funding.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Udupi District Assistant Director of Youth Services and Sports C B Rangayya informed that as per the announced provision, each Sangha would be remunerated with Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 annually. Currently, the allocated fund is seldom sanctioned by the government. This has hindered the activities of the Sanghas. Government has been urged to sanction the allocated sum to keep the project active, he said.

The measures for implementing the Panchayath Yuva Kreeda aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) is yet to take off in the district. As per the schedule, 14 Gram Panchayaths should be covered, each in the first two years. This provision ensures compulsory playground in all the schools coming under Gram Panchayath jurisdiction. PYYKA Committee has been recently instituted in the district.

Zilla Panchayath president will head the Committee. ZP CEO will be the vice president.
Rangayya informed that a proposal outlining the plans for introducing the provisions in 14 Gram Panchayaths has been submitted to the government. The process will begin once the proposal is approved, he said.

These Gram Panchayaths will be facilitated with the provisions under the programmes for the year 2008-09 and 2009-10.
