Shahrukh Khan booked for brawl at Wankhede

Facing ban, actor denies being drunk
Last Updated 17 May 2012, 20:39 IST

Actor Shahrukh Khan is in the news for the wrong reasons again.

This time for raking up dust on Wankhede Stadium’s cricket pitch on Wednesday night after his team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians in an IPL-5 match.

The actor has been acccused of offensive behaviour and using lurid language at security guards and officials of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Zone-I) Iqbal Shaikh on Thursday afternoon confirmed that on a complaint filed by MCA Joint Secretary, Nitin Dalal, a non-cognisable offence (NC) was registered against the actor and stated, “ it is only after investigating the nature of ‘act or deed,’ we will decide whether any cognisable offence can be registered.”

To a query whether the actor was drunk at the time of the verbal skirmish, ACP Shaikh emphasised: “ His breath did smell of drink when I reached the spot late in the night...I pacified the two parties who were hurling abuses at each other. But whether he had drinks earlier or not is not my concern. We do not go around giving breath-analyser test to people arguing or using abusive language at each other in a private space. And Wankhede Stadium is a private space. We give such tests only when public spaces are involved or physical attacks take place.”

However, even as the telly screens through the day screamed “blue murder,” the Bollywood ‘Badshah’ held a press meet, stating, “ I don’t know what they are talking...but the fact remains I became angry when I saw them (security guards) behaving in a brutish manner. They (kids) were not even on the pitch and they were just playing at one corner and some of the kids and girls are barely 10 to 12 years old.“If you say that they want to ban me from entering the stadium then let me make it clear, I myself wouldn’t like to go or would even ask my kids to go to a place where children are treated in such brutish manner.”

According to the actor, he had gone to pick up his children. He congratulated the team and upon his return he saw a man manhandling the children, pushing little girls. He went up to the person and told him not to behave that way.

The actor dismissed the accusation: “I was not under alcohol influence. They can say what they want in order to justify their behaviour. And so far I have not decided to file a counter-complaint against them.” The MCA till late in the day refrained from clarifying the rumour whether the officials had imposed a ban on the actor’s entry into the stadium.
