KDA wary of MES 'Maha' convention

Last Updated 17 May 2012, 18:45 IST

The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has urged Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda not to grant permission to the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) for holding the ‘Maha Melav’ in Belgaum on May 20.

KDA Chairperson Mukyamantri Chandru told reporters  on Thursday, that such meetings had led to violence and affected linguistic harmony in the past. “The MES could utilise the convention as a platform to attack Kannada language and also reiterate its demand for the merger of Belgaum with Maharashtra,” he said.

KDA will be organising a ‘language harmony’ convention in Solapur on May 21. Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is expected to inaugurate the convention.

A multi-language poetry meet will be organised and 231 SSLC and PUC students, who studied in Kannada medium in Maharashtra, will be felicitated at the convention.
