SP MLA desperate to erase jail record for passport

Barely a few months ago, at the height of the elections, Ravidas Mehrotra was announcing proudly his record of going to jail for taking up the issues of his constituency.

However, after being elected to the Assembly from Lucknow Central constituency, the same records are now proving to be an obstacle in his attempt to obtain passport.

A police constable who came for verifications after the MLA had applied for passport recently, declared that they are criminal in nature, which meant the MLA now cannot obtain a passport in his name. Mehrotra found his way into Limca and Guinness books after having gone to jail 240 times in his political career.

He never failed to boast about it in his public meetings showing the jail terms as evidence of
his willingness to work for people.

However, Mehrotra was enraged by the cop’s report that the records against him and is said to have threatened him with dire consequences for filing the adverse report.
The MLA is also desperate to “erase” the records in order to obtain passport.

According to him, the cases against him are politically motivated. “The cases were slapped on me during the previous regimes for taking up causes of the people of my area,” he said.
Police sources say many of the cases also pertained to damaging public properties and breach of peace.
