Last Updated 28 May 2012, 20:25 IST

Girls pipped boys to take the national top spots in Humanities and Commerce, leaving the top slot in Science to the males in the CBSE Class XII examination results, even as the board prepared to provide photocopies of answer scripts on demand for the first time this year.

Mohammed Ismat of Gyanit Academy in Manipur, has done the North-East region proud by scoring 99 per cent to top the Science stream. Described by the Board as a “rare feat”, he has obtained 100 marks in Chemistry, Political Science and Mathematics, followed by 97 in Physics and 98 in English. He comes from an economically weak family of Manipur’s remote Thoubal district, plagued by power cuts and lack of infrastructure, which did not deter him from studying hard despite all odds and fighting competition from his counterparts in the metros with a better quality of living.

“I could not have been happier. I want to pursue Physics Honours and get into civil services. I firmly believe that without struggle, one cannot achieve one’s goals,” said Ismat.

The top spot in Humanities and Commerce streams went to girls - Astha Sethi from Delhi Public School, Vadodara, with 98 per cent and Navya Singhla from Bhavan's Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, with 98 per cent.

Photocopies

The decision to provide photocopies of evaluated answer books follows a Supreme Court directive in August last, the board said.

Applications seeking photocopies will be received from May 31 and the norms will be available on the official website soon. Verification forms will be available on the board’s website as well.

To help students and parents beat post-result stress, the board will continue with its tele-counselling till June 7. Close to 50 principals, trained counsellors from CBSE- affiliated government and private schools and a few psychologists are participating in the counselling this year.

The Central Board of Secondary Education Class XII results have seen a drop in pass percentage by 0.69 per cent compared to last year. Chennai has again topped — among regions — with an overall pass percentage of 90.59 per cent.

“The all-India pass percentage for eight CBSE regions is 80.19 per cent. Girls recorded a pass percentage of 86.21 per cent against 75.80 per cent by boys. A total of 8,16,000 students had appeared for the exam this year, which is an increase of 5.94 per cent over last year’s figure,” said Rama Sharma, CBSE public relations officer.

The pass percentage of regular students has been 82.51 compared to 38.85 of private candidates. Close to 2,705 centres conducted the exam this year. Forty-seven cases of cheating were registered during this year’s exam, the same as last year.

Allahabad topped with 13 cases of cheating and Delhi came second with 10 cases.
The pass percentage of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas has climbed down from 96.87 per cent in 2011 to 95.96 per cent this year. Kendriya Vidyalayas have registered 94.13 per cent, which is up from 93.42 per cent in 2011.

The overall compartment percentage has also increased with 11.41 per cent candidates placed in compartment, compared to 10.91 per cent last year. A statement from the board said the first compartment examination will be held on July 16, 2012.
